In 2023, DC had its highest murder rate since 1997, while crime decreased in most other places across the country. Opportunity DC conducted polling in September to ensure that lawmakers understand the preferences and perspectives of District residents, not just the loudest voices in the room or those on X.
Our polling found:
- Voters overwhelmingly support a comprehensive approach to public safety that includes more tools and resources for law enforcement and targeted solutions that address the root causes of crime.
- 66% of DC voters have taken steps to enhance the safety of their homes, vehicles, or workplaces in the last year.
- 54% of residents have changed their day-to-day activities due to concerns about crime.
- 40% of residents say they or someone they know has been a victim of crime in the last year.
Over 40% rank public safety and crime as the number one issue facing their community.

A comprehensive approach requires more support for law enforcement. That is why 70% of voters say that MPD needs more tools and resources to keep us safe.
